Outcomes Aren’t Yours: Write the Story Anyway
We’re taught to grip outcomes—to measure worth by what sticks, sells, or scales. But control is a terrible creative partner. It makes our bodies tight, our voices small, and our work transactional.
This episode offers another way: alignment over ambition.
Alignment doesn’t erase effort. It changes the quality of it. Instead of forcing, you practice. Instead of bargaining (“I’ll do this if it works”), you show up because it’s yours to do. Faith language fits here: plant the seed you’ve been given; the harvest isn’t your job.
A phrase we keep coming back to is “ease, not easy.” Easy means no friction (rare). Ease means your inner yes is accessible—even inside challenge. Your breath is available. Your shoulders drop. You feel the goodness of the work, if not the comfort of certainty.
So what does this look like in real life?
- Surrender the scoreboard. Keep a light touch on metrics. They can inform, not define.
- Name the assignment. Today’s task is the page, the phone call, the outline, the walk. Not the book deal, the conversion, the viral moment.
- Practice in drafts. Faithful drafts—of writing, of offers, of conversations—teach you what the outcome can’t.
- Listen three ways. To God (or your deepest wisdom). To your body (signals of ease/strain). To the work itself (what it asks next).
- Bless the nonlinearity. Loops are learning. Alignment often arrives by circling closer, not sprinting straight.
If you need a starting place, try this micro-ritual:
- Write one sentence: “My assignment today is ______.”
- Ask your body: What version of this feels most easeful? (Still challenging, but not dulling.)
- Do five minutes. Close with: “The result isn’t mine.”
When we stop clutching outcomes, we get our voice back. We notice joy again—not the dopamine of achievement, but the steadier joy of congruence: I did the thing that’s mine to do.
Write the story anyway. Draft the offer anyway. Host the room anyway. The result isn’t your identity. Your aliveness is.
