“Are You Sure That’s the Full Truth?” A Script for the Perfectionist Spiral
The perfectionist spiral usually sounds convincing.
It tells you:
- this has to be flawless
- you’re behind
- you’re failing
- people will judge you
- you don’t have what it takes
- you should start over
- you should stop before you’re embarrassed
And the hardest part is that, in the moment, it can feel like the truth.
This episode offers a gentle interruption—one that creates space, not shame:
“Are you sure that’s the full truth?”
Why interruptions work
Spirals are narrowed states. Your brain is scanning for threat, and your nervous system is braced. That’s not a great place to make decisions, create, parent, lead, or communicate.
An interruption doesn’t argue with the Perfectionist.
It simply creates enough room for a second look.
The script (simple version)
When you feel the spiral rise, try:
-
Name it: “The Perfectionist is online.”
-
Interrupt: “Are you sure that’s the full truth?”
-
Widen: “What else might be true?”
-
Support: “What would be kind and realistic right now?”
-
One step: choose one small action that protects your baseline.
This isn’t about “thinking positive.”
It’s about reclaiming choice.
Integration: making it usable
Week 3 is about building repeatable supports across Heart/Mind/Body/Soul so you don’t have to figure everything out in the moment.
Think of it as a “baseline kit” you can return to when life gets heavy.
